Evaluation of the Survey Questionnaire

The Black Sea Regional Committee of the IOC prepared a Questionnaire in order to provide information for the needs of the end users of the operational oceanography data and data products. In principle the Questionnaire was the same used by the EuroGOOS. The preliminary results of the evaluation is presented below.

The Survey Questionnaire prepared among the 36 operational marine services to reveal hot spots of the data and products of the Black Sea showed that the major concern is environmental protection. This is followed by Services and Transport. More specifically, among environmental problems, oil pollution control is the most desired topic to be included in the Black Sea GOOS programme. The participants also found Services, like weather forecasting and data consultancy important. Among the other topics, Port operations, Environmental forecasts and Shipping operations are agreeably listed by the parties as the most data or product demanding applications. 

For the data variables, parameters, and products in the Black Sea GOOS, the participants were altogether focused on two topics; Atmospheric boundary layers and Sea surface. The rest of the items were marked only by a small percentage of the contributors. The Wind speed and the wind direction on 10 meters, along with Air Temperature were the most important Atmospheric parameters selected nearly by all the participants. The most demanding Sea surface variable is listed as Significant Wave Height by all the contributors. This was followed by Sea surface temperature, Swell, Wave direction, and Wave period. As the coastal zone is compared with offshore, the order of the required Black Sea GOOS data and products remained the same while the coastal zone was found more important. 

The interests of the organisations in question, were concerned with environmental protection, seafaring transport, oil pollution, weather forecast, atmospheric events at the lower layers and sea surface state, especially wave height. This figure seems to address oil traffic in the Black Sea and its consequences on the Black Sea environment. As for the remedies, improved weather forecasting and other information on weather and sea conditions that could increase safety of the seafaring activities are pointed.
