5. Status: completed
6. Period (start/end):
August 1998
- December 2000
7. Objectives:
- To digitise the unique and substantial zooplankton data of IBSS for a safe archiving: For this a database program will be used for entering species level data. We have already experience from a similar work carried out for the Black Sea.
- To evaluate taxonomic composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in different regions of the eastern Mediterranean: It is hoped that these evaluations will result in published publication/s.
- To analyse recent zooplankton samples obtained from the Turkish coast of Mediterranean for the estimation of zooplankton fauna of this very poorly studied region: We have samples from various cruises collected using a Nansen net (175 m) since 1997 in the northeastern Mediterranean. These samples will be analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively by experienced IBSS experts whilst a training provided for Turkish scientists.
8. Results:
-
Between 27 April and 21 May 1999, 4 investigators (Drs J. Zagorodnyaya, D. Altukhov, A. Gubanova and A. Shmeleva) from Sevastopol (Ukraine) visited Erdemli (Turkey). During this visit, these scientists analysed recent Mediterranean samples and started to archive Ukranian zooplankton data obtained in 1970's in computer.
-
Later during 22 June - 13 July 1999, CP-Country Co-Director Dr A. Kovalev and his colleague Dr V. Skryabin visited Erdemli. With Dr Kovalev we completed the second paper mentioned above. Meantime Dr Skryabin continued storing historical zooplankton data in computer.
-
11 November - 10 December, 1999, Dr A. Gordina visited Erdemli to discuss writing of a paper on the distribution of ichthyoplankton in different regions of the eastern Mediterranean as well as to help processing egg and larva samples obtained from the Sea of Marmara and Levantine Basin of the eastern Mediterranean. We discovered eggs and larva of a fish species (Mauricus mulleri) from the Sea of Marmara which was never reported before from this region. We are going to prepare a paper on this finding.
20 August - 26 August co-director Dr. A. E. Kideys visited Sevastopol for discussion of problems of finishing of works on Grant.
-
During the all period of the LG (December 1998 - December 2000) five meetings of Turkish and Ukrainian groups were held in Erdemli and Sevastopol. At last, participants of Grant from Sevastopol (Drs. A. Shmeleva, Yu. Zagorodnyaya, A. Gubanova from 23 November to 20 December 2000; Drs. A. Kovalev, V. Skryabin, D. Altukhov and A. Gordina from 7 December to 20 December 2000) visited Erdemli. During this visit recently obtained samples were analysed, database on the EMED zooplankton was completed and papers and final report were prepared.

L.) in the Black Sea. ICES J. of Marine Science, 56: 58-64. 1999.
In this study, basically, we show how environmental conditions affect the egg and larvae distribution of anchovy (which is the most abundant fish species of the eastern Mediterranean). Moreover our results explain the shift observed in the 1990's in the spawning areas of this fish.

Here we summarise striking findings of several recent publication on the Black Sea zooplankton. It is worth to note that most of these publications themselves were made possible due to support from miscellaneous NATO projects.
