1. Project: ENVIR.LG 951569 2. Project title: Long-term fluctuations of the zooplankton in the Black Sea 3. Participants:
4. Codirectors:
5. Status: completed 6. Period (start/end): 1996-1998 7. Objectives: The objective of the project is to study long term variability of the zooplankton to both natural factors and anthropogenic impact, to distinguish trends in the planktonic community in different regions of the Black Sea. 8. Results: The project utilized zooplankton data sets of IBSS (1948-1995) and of IMS (1954; 1991-1995) and climatic data sets of both MHI and IMS after thorough quality control. In addition a review of the most important studies carried out to date was made. Seasonal and annual variability of copepod species as well as immigration of Mediterranean species into the Black Sea are evaluated. Long term changes in the production of the most dominant copepod species in the region was estimated. Changes in zooplankton composition and biomass were described and discussed under the view of anthropogenic and natural changes in the Black Sea for inshore and offshore regions. Lastly, in an overall review, the changes in the Black Sea zooplankton community were compared to changes in other seas to detect possible teleconnections between the oceans and to estimate the impact of the climatic variability on fluctuations of the zooplankton. 9.
